The withdrawal button: what the new EU rule requires from online stores
Since 19 June 2026, every online store selling to consumers in the EU must offer a contract withdrawal function directly on the site: a clear button, a confirmation step and an automatic acknowledgement of receipt. The rule comes from Directive (EU) 2023/2673, which added a new Article 11a to the Consumer Rights Directive. Romania transposed it through Government Emergency Ordinance no. 18/2026, amending Ordinance no. 34/2014, and Denmark through a new section 20 a in the Consumer Contracts Act (forbrugeraftaleloven). If you accept guest orders, customers must be able to reach the function without creating an account. Minimum data. The customer enters or confirms their name, the details identifying the contract (order number, products) and where they want the acknowledgement sent, usually their email. A confirmation step. After reviewing the data, the customer clicks a second button, such as "Confirm withdrawal". The withdrawal is in time if it is submitted through this function before the period expires. Acknowledgement on a durable medium. Without undue delay, you send the customer an acknowledgement, usually by email, with the content of the request and the date and time…
