Direct checkout in Messenger and Meta AI: what it means for your store
On 6 October 2026, at Advertising Week New York, Meta announced that it is testing buying directly in the conversation: the customer asks about a product in Messenger or in Meta AI and pays there, without visiting the store's website. It sounds like a big change, but for now it's a test, with limited partners and markets. Below I explain what exactly was announced, what isn't known yet and what you can prepare now, whether you sell on Shopify or WooCommerce. 1. What Meta announced There are two separate tests, plus a feature that already exists: Checkout in Messenger, through Meta Business Agent. Business Agent is Meta's assistant that answers messages on behalf of the store, recommends products and can hand the conversation over to a person on the team. Together with Shopify, Meta is testing a direct checkout in that conversation: the customer learns about the product from the store's assistant and buys it on the spot. Checkout in Meta AI. Meta said that this autumn it starts testing direct checkout in Meta AI, the general assistant in its apps, with Adyen, PayPal, Shopify and Stripe as payment partners. The idea: when a product comes up in a conversation with Meta AI, people can buy it right there. Muse, the personal assistant launched in the US , already has checkout via Link by Stripe and Shop Pay, and Meta is adding the PayPal wallet. Important: Meta gave no general launch date and no list of countries for these tests. Experience so far shows that features like these usually start in the US. For stores in Romania and Denmark, treat them as something coming, not something you can switch on tomorrow. Check in Meta Business Suite and Commerce Manager what's available in your own account. 2. Why it matters, even if you don't have the feature yet The direction is clear: Meta wants the path from ad to order to stay inside its apps. We saw the same with the in-app product page, which I wrote about in the article on Meta product browsing . Checkout in the conversation…
